Preventing Nest Box Eye Infections in Baby Rabbits

by Josée

The baby rabbits opened their eyes a couple days ago; this normally happens ten days after being born. When the kits start to open their eyes I check each baby rabbit to make sure both eyes have opened. Any closed gooey eyes could indicate nest box eye infections which is something that I have encountered once before. Keeping the nest box clean can help prevent eye infections. I usually clean the nest box a couple days before the babies open their eyes and I avoid using nesting materials that are dusty. If there any signs of eye infection I treat the kit right away by cleaning the crusty or sticky discharge from the eyes with warm water and a soft cloth and then gently opening the eye. I repeat this several times a day until the eye is free of discharge for 24 hours. I have also used an over the counter conjunctivitis (pink eye) eye drop with some success. Any eye infections that are left untreated can lead to blindness but if the infection is treated promptly it usually clears up on it’s own.

Have you tried a small barely there dab of EV coconut oil in with the warm water soft rag? I know its great for clearing pink eye in humans. It has great healing properties. Cute babies 🙂

With twins, I have found that the free super savers shipping on economy size diapers is a godsend. The diapers seem a little thinner but I have never had a problem with leaking. They have the same stretch tabs on the sides that I liked about honest diapers. I love having these shipped right to my door & always having so many on hand. It's one less thing to worry about carrying when shopping with the kids. They always ship within a couple of days so I just make sure that I order them a few days earlier than when it looks like we'll need them.

Does it matter what kind of eye drops it is?

Homeopathic Similasan is available at many stores & pharmacies as well as online. Walmart stocks it in the pharmacy area with other eyedrops. Pink Eye, Allergy, Complete Eye Relief & more! Absolutely do not use any ol’ eye drops (toxic & negative side effects for humans & animal eyes)!

Try using an eye drop that has some antibiotic in it. Something for pink eye (conjunctivitis) seems to work well. You can usually find some at the pharmacy. Hope that helps!

Should have mentioned entering which account to use before i wasted so much time filling the comment box!!!! Natures Way Liquid Coconut oil is non GMO with 93% Mct's, worked better then Polysporin's pinkeye, a 1% hydrogen peroxide solution mixed with a tablespoon of Borax and Vetericyn's Ophthalmic gel. The verdict is still out on adding 500mg of L-Lysine to the food per day. Going on three weeks…Dang air conditioner blowing dust around….plus a lazy wife doing nothing while i worked 13 hour shifts.

Hey, I have a baby bunny, its probaly 3 or 4 weeks old. we have wild rabbits running all around and one day I went outside ad found this baby bunny laying there. I took it inside and we have it in a box. Its drinking and eating normally but it only has one eye open. The eye that is not open has a whole bunch of puss coming out of it. I do not know what to do? what would you do if you were in this place? Its really small, fits in my hand and it looses its balance. We put a warm soft rag and have been whiping it but it just pusses and pusses. We left it alone for awhile and now its crusty. So if you can let me know what i should do, call 1406-476-7666. Or email me on ar.conard@teameureka.net Thank You!!!

Hi, we have the same issue with a baby bunny that is 15 days old. Keep cleaning with warm water and cotton ball but a lot of white puss.
