The Last Week of Summer

by Josée

It’s the final week of summer. The growth that summer brought in my gardens is coming to an end. The sunflowers are drooping and the remaining tomatoes are ripening more slowly. The seeds I planted for the fall-winter garden have all sprouted but I cannot predict how big they will grow. We will cover them in row covers but that will only provide some protection from Father Frost.

Last week I was mourning the end of summer. I was resisting the change, holding on. Resisting is futile because change is the natural constant in life. Now I am feeling tired, perhaps I was resisting too much. Like the plants in my garden I’ve poured out so much of myself throughout the summer. Now I am ready to let go, refocus and move on to another season. Autumn.

Same here. We had a frost last night; I covered my two most productive tomatoes but was ready to let the rest of it go. I'm feeling that same "end of summer" tiredness, I'd been feeling a lot of anxiety about all that was on my plate, and decided to just start proactively letting some things go. We never get it all done! At the same time, I'm happy to turn my mind and body to cozy indoor fall pursuits, like more reading and knitting…

In the same place. I had been resisting the change in seasons, but over the last week I have embraced it, ready to move on to autumn and the beauty it brings.
