Garden Journal (yr 4: vol 1)

by Josée

It is the beginning of March and a warm (17°C) sunshiny Saturday afternoon was the only invitation I needed to get my hands dirty and plant the first seeds in my garden. With the help of my youngest, we planted Super Sugar Snap peas and Mammoth Melting Sugar snow peas near the two trellises my husband built last year. Then we sowed three types of spinach: Bloomsdale Savoy, Corvair and Olympia. Last year I had a difficult time with growing spinach, which was disappointing because we really enjoy eating it. I am hoping that three different varieties will lead me to triple spinach success this year! After looking through my seed stash I found several lettuce varieties and mescluns, so I planted some Rouge D’hiver, Winter Density and a Mustard Blend. I also tossed in a few French Breakfast radish seeds in with the hope that my family will finally learn to enjoy them.

That is all for now. I won’t be starting my tomatoes and peppers for another few weeks, despite my impatience. In the meantime I will keep careful watch of my newly planted seeds and dream of fresh produce.
