101 Things For Kids To Do Outside: Book Review, Giveaway and a Special Coupon!

by Josée

101 Things For Kids To Do Outside written by Dawn Isaac is a fun-tastic book jam packed with activities for children to do outside. Beneath the book’s simple green cover lies a treasure trove of ideas, games, projects and activities that will peak the interest of any child, young or old. One thing I love about this book is that it’s written for kids! Dawn, a mom of three herself, does a great job describing her projects clearly and with humour, and her beautiful pictures make the book engaging, even for the non-reader. Warning: Dawn enjoys poking a little fun at us parents in her book. 🙂

As the title suggests there are 101 things to do in this book. That’s a lot! There’s a handy section at the back of the book that organizes all the activities into specific groups: quick projects, longer projects, good for young children. good for older children, good for parties, gardening projects etc. There are so many great things in this book, the challenge is figuring out which one to try first.

A few weeks ago, my children made a list of the projects they wanted to do. It’s quite the list! The very first project they did was Set Up Camp (p. 92), clearly camping season can’t come soon enough. My son spearheaded this project and built his very own tent, and then two more for his younger siblings. Now we have our very own backyard tent city. The next project they worked on was Construct a Water Wall (p. 72). What a fun project! My son built the trellis and my daughter did the art. After some help with connecting containers and hoses, my children were captivated by it for the entire afternoon. Next on the list was Set Up a Potion Lab (p.20), wow I’m sure glad we did that outside!

Once of the most recent project they did was Build a Mini Rockery (p.26). My children gathered plants, rocks, fairies and a magical fairy door to make their very own magic fairy rockery. The little red fairy door, shown in the pictures below, is made by Sugar Bush Fairies, a small home based business located in Ontario, Canada. Allan and his partner Sarah work together to create these lovely enchanted handcrafted wooden fairy doors and they have been so kind to offer my readers a special coupon for their Etsy store! Keep on reading to get the code.

The Special Coupon: Get 50% off your very own little fairy door by using the Coupon Code: FAIRYMAGIC50OFF at the Sugar Bush Fairies Etsy Store. This coupon is valid until June 30/2017.

And, to top it off, Firefly Books has generously offered a copy of 101 Things For Kids To Do Outside to giveaway one of my lucky readers. The giveaway winner will be announced on May 18th!

We’re expecting our first baby in the next few weeks and really want to raise him to love the outdoors. This year we plan to go on lots of baby wearing hikes but I think this book would give us lots of great ideas for as he gets older.

My grandson is only 6 months old, but he has loved the outdoors from day 1. When I keep him I try to make sure we go on a long walk & spend time in his beloved Little Tykes swing. This book sounds like a great resource for later on.
