Annie and Dawn are the bloggers behind Mud Puddles to Meteors and together they’ve put together a wonderful book all about weather science: Whatever the Weather: Science Experiments and Art Activities That Explore the Wonders of Weather.
The beginning of the book offers parents a quick crash course in weather science and is then divided into four sections: cold, rain, sun and wind. Each section uses simple experiments and art to help children understand common weather events. If it’s cold out get your kids making their own ice storm or hail. Is it raining outside? Paint with raindrops while using your very own nature paintbrush. As the sun comes out, help your kids learn about evaporation or paint with colourful ice cubes, and when the wind blows work together to learn about the atmosphere and air pressure.
The experiments and art projects in this book don’t require much in the ways of supplies. In fact, most of the things a child may need are already waiting outside (depending on the season of course) or around the house. With each experiment in this book Annie and Dawn have included handy tips and a ‘More to Explore’ section that invites children to dig deeper into each topic.
We’ve had some lovely sunny weather lately and my kids have really enjoyed trying out some of the experiments from the sun and wind sections of this book. They’ve painted with ice cubes, learned something special about how fresh and salt water evaporate, made solar prints and obsessed over getting an egg into a bottle. As they’ve been trying out different experiments our books is getting dogeared and sandy. It’s the sign of a well loved book! The thing that I really like about Whatever the Weather is that it helps children and parents see weather as a wonderful and exciting part of our lives. That’s a tough one as we are a divided family! Solid four seasons here in the Midwest and each member covets a different season for its weather but today was winner for all at 65 + sunny + a hike in the woods.

I honestly can’t remember if I’ve read this yet. It’s been on my list. If I did read it, it was from the library and I’d like to have my own copy so we can actually do some of the cool activities in it.
Looks a great book. Growing up my mum and I loved wild weather. High winds and stormy rains. There’s nothing as invigorating.
