There’s No Such Thing As Bad Weather: Book Review

by Josée

There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather is written by Linda Åkeson McGurk, a Swedish-born mother of two that lives in rural Indiana, USA. In Indiana, McGurk wondered why so few children were playing in parks, walking about town or going outside in rain or snow. Looking for answers and hoping to show her own daughters a glimpse of her own childhood, McGurk leaves Indiana to spend six months in Sweden. Along the way, she makes many wonderful discoveries about the importance of nature and outdoor play in raising healthy and happy children.

Prior to reading this book I had been following McGurk’s blog and Facebook page: Rain or Shine Mamma. I really liked the content she was sharing and was thrilled when she published her book. With the book finally in hand, I looked at the cover with curiosity. Here was Backwoods Mama about to read a book by Rain or Shine Mamma. Would I learn something new, helpful or different? The answer: Absolutely!

Not only is There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather very approachable and heartfelt, intertwined in McGurk’s story are Scandinavian parenting tips for dressing for the weather, making outside time a priority, getting your little one to nap outside (wish I would have done that!) and fostering child-lead play. She writes about the importance of letting our kids get dirty and climb trees. She even delves into the hot topic of free range parenting.

I promise that no matter where you are on your journey to raise outdoor kids There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather will give you helpful tools, tricks and tips. Even outdoorsy parents will find nuggets of gold in this book. My only warning is that you may want to move to Sweden after reading it.

There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes! – Linda Åkeson McGurk

My biggest challenge in getting my kid (I only have one) is often *my* motivation and willingness (or challenge with) to deal with cold weather.

Our biggest challenge is our work schedules. Mr NTF works 4-on-4-off so sometimes he works weekends and we just lose motivation to get out on those weekends! ?

I find that our outdoor play is much deeper and wide ranging when it is truly child led, and that is MUCH easier to accomplish that when friends are present in addition to my 2 kids. My biggest challenge is maintaining a supply of friends with time to come spend the day in the wild patches! Especially as the weather “worsens” it’s hard to orchestrate get together. I have started a local nature play Facebook group though, so I have a pretty good supply of friends.ds to come!

Our biggest challenge is our schedules and lack of daylight in the winter! By the time my oldest gets out of school there’s only an hour left of sunlight, and it’s never enough!

I’d love to listen to this book I’ve already read it but would be amazing to have my own copy to listen to in the car while dreaming about being outside! Thanks for the gentle reminder to buck up and get outside!

Our biggest challenge is the COLD, our kiddos are on snow day #9 today. The last few snow days have been -20+ so getting outdoors have been daunting. Hoping for warmer weather soon!
