Fall Outside: 30 Prompts for Exploring Nature with Children

by Josée

Well Hello! It’s so nice to pop in and share something with you.

I have been struggling to get outside this fall. How about you? It’s not that I don’t want to go outside. I love spending time in nature. It soothes my soul and keeps me grounded. And yet, my days seem to get filled up with tasks that keep me indoors. Some of these tasks are important, others are distractions, but before I know it the sun has set and I haven’t spent much time outdoors. The struggle is very real and the consequences are not pretty. As I fail to get outside I’m noticing that my physical and mental health are suffering. Just the other day I changed the password on my phone and then complete forgot it. Who does that? Apparently a rather frazzled mom. And my kids? Yes, this lack of nature time has been making them go batty too.

As I’ve been struggling to get outside, I was reminded of a fun fall challenge that I took part in five years ago. It was 2016 when I took part in Fall Outside, a thirty day challenge started by Dawn Suzette Smith, co-author of the book Whatever the Weather. Dawn started Fall Outside to inspire families to enjoy nature together during a time of the year that can be more difficult to get outside: November. For the entire month of November, Dawn would email daily prompts to encourage families to go outside and be curious about nature. Those participating would share their adventures on social media and we would all encourage each other. It was so much fun, and such a great motivator! However, in 2018 Dawn could no longer run Fall Outside and I offered to take over. I ran Fall Outside (and Spring Outside!) for a couple years before quickly realizing that it was a lot of work one mama to do.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, last week I had a hair-brained idea of bringing Fall Outside back to life in a way that was more manageable. Instead of a 30-day fall challenge where I send out daily emails, I would compile the challenge into an eBook. And I did just that! I have a brand new eBook called Fall Outside: 30 Prompts for Exploring Nature with Children and you can learn all about it here. The eBook can be purchased from TeachersPayTeachers.

This eBook offers parents and educators thirty fun prompts for inviting children to explore the season of fall outdoors. The prompts can be used as a 30-day challenge, like the original Fall Outside, or they can be used randomly throughout fall to help encourage your family to get outside.

Our family will be using the Fall Outside prompts to help us get outside and connect with the beautiful fleeting season of fall and I hope you will join us. If you share pictures of your fall adventures tag #falloutside and #falloutside2021 so that we can share our adventures with each other.

Happy Adventuring Friends!
