Watersports at the Cabin

by Josée

One of the most exhilarating things to do out at the lake is water sports. In my adolescence, when my husband’s family purchase the cabin, the first priorities was always getting the boat into the water as soon as the ice melted and then pulling people behind it on an array of devices. When we were young slalom skiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding and barefooting were the popular sports. My father-in-law’s penchant for all things fast definitely has an influence on all the craziness that would go on behind that boat.

As time has gone on water sports continue to be an important part of our visits here but the craziness has gone down several notches. Now we enjoy a leisurely boat ride watching people wake surf behind the boat or children ride on the inflatable ski trainer. On occasion we tour the lake after supper, waving to neighbours and stopping at others’ docks for a quick hello. I enjoy this leisurely pace, but as soon as my children ask for more speed I see a glint of mischief in my father-in-law’s eyes. The boat throttle goes down and we are transported swiftly across the shimmering water. I grab on to the nearest person to steady myself, forgetting how fast the boat can go. “This is good for them”, says my father-in-law, and I see the smiles on my children’s faces.
