Puerto Surf Lessons, Puerto Escondido

by Josée

During our stay in Puerto Escondido we took three surfing lessons with Puerto Surf Lessons. This surfing school is run by Celestino and his Canadian (Okanagan!) born partner Melinda. When we sent an inquiry email about surfing lessons Melinda was very fast in replying. All communications were clear and prompt, something I really appreciated.

During our first surfing lesson Celestino we started with some surfing basics tips: how to get up on the board, surfing stance and wave safety. We both felt that we were in good hands from the beginning. Both Jeremie and I have experience with water sports behind a boat but none in the ocean prior to our lessons. Once Celestino was satisfied with our basic knowledge we went by foot from the surf school to La Punta on Playa Zicatela where we were quickly initiated into the thrill and perils of surfing.

In each of our lessons there were about five students and Celestino had two other surfing teachers join him. I  must admit that Celestino is incredibly knowledgeable about surfing and the ocean and was always keen to remind us how to safely jump off the surf board and swim back out into sea. He is, in fact, a highly trained lifeguard and works on the often treacherous Playa Zicatela. The only thing I wish was that I knew more Spanish so that I could understand the fun banter between the instructors. Next time.

I highly recommend taking lessons with Celestino and his crew if you want to learn to surf in Puerto Escondido. For more information go to their website: Puerto Surf Lessons.
